What is SAFeban?

SAFeban is a combination of SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework) and Kanban. The Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) assists organizations in overcoming the significant challenges of developing and delivering work in timely manner. It assists in building multiple solutions with portfolio-level coordination and approach. Kanban, in collaboration with SAFe, provides avenues for quantitative decision making. With Kanban, WIP is engaged with SAFe which helps in analyzing work and task distribution among the team. This collaboration helps in exposing risk at an early stage.

Types of levels in SAFe:

  • Two Level SAFe
  • Three level SAFe
  • Four level SAFe

ScrumDo incorporates Portfolio SAFe where all the above types can be used. While creating a portfolio, you can choose the type of portfolio you desire.

Let's take a tour of the most used SAFe levels in ScrumDo while we create the Portfolio:

  1. Three Level SAFe: This type of SAFe helps in managing three levels of parent-child relationship which includes :
  • Portfolio : This contains the epic(s)
  • Program level: Contains program increments (Iterations) which further contain features
  • Team level: This delivery team level contains Sprints which further contains User Stories

On choosing 'Three Level SAFe' option, you are directed to a screen where the SAFe feature can be enabled (make sure the Iteration's timespan must be lined up with parent's iteration). As per the requirement, you can add number of Programs and teams.

For example, if you select 2 in each of these fields, each level (Program and Team) will have 2 workspaces. Once providing these values, modifications can be made in the fields (renaming fields or selecting the flow of workspace). Please refer to the below screenshot:

Here, 'Voluntary & Group Benefits' is the portfolio which will have Epics. 2nd level contains 'Dental Vision' and 'Income Replaced' programs under that portfolio. These portfolio will have work type as feature which will be the break down of an Epic. 3rd level contains two teams, 'AppDev' and 'BizGroup' which may be the breakdown of the 2nd level.

  1. Four Level SAFe: This type helps in managing four levels of parent-child relationship which includes:
  • Portfolio : This contains the epic(s)
  • Value Stream: This level contains Capabilities (breakdown of epics). This level provides series of steps to build solutions.
  • Program level: Contains program increments (Iterations) which further contain features.
  • Team level: This delivery team level contains Sprints which further contains User Stories.

When selecting this level, you will be directed to the screen where you will have options to input number of 'Value Streams', 'Programs' and 'Teams' required for the project. Once the values are provided you will have options to give appropriate names to each level.

This is same as “Three level SAFe” with an exception in the additional level 'Value Stream'. This helps in more defined management and distribution of work.
